Plastic Free Champion Award

Sheepdrove is proud to have achieved the Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Champion Award and here’s how…

♻️ Reusable glass water bottles, water refill station and glasses as standard since we opened in 2004

♻️ Use of eco-friendly refillable cleaning products produced by local social enterprise Oxford based SESI Refill and sourced from local micro business Thatcham Refillable

♻️ Organic teabags which are not heat sealed with plastic from local family owned tea merchants Dragonfly Teas; did you know that some brands of tea use plastic in the bag fabric itself?

♻️ No single-use plastic permitted so plastic cutlery, utensils, bottled water, mini condiments, plates, bowls, cups, glasses, balloons and floral foam are prohibited in our wedding and event contracts

♻️ Any single-use glasses, plates, bowls, cups, stirrers, cutlery or utensils offered by food trucks must be compostable plastic-free catering disposables

♻️ No plastic or PVC clingfilm in the catering kitchen

♻️ Waste materials sorted and recycled by a licensed waste collection

Our award-winning green building was designed so that all building materials could be reused or recycled at end of life, plus no PVC was used in construction of the venue, including electrical wiring, and toilet cubicle partitions are made from recycled toothpaste tubes, wash basin panels from recycled CDs and dining room chairs from recycled paper.

We’re all doing our bit to recycle, but plastic waste is still everywhere. While it’s important to recycle the plastic we use, it’s much better for the planet if we reduce the amount we buy in the first place. The truth is that there are a lot plastics that cannot be effectively recycled and a lot of plastics that can be effectively recycled but aren’t and end up in landfill.

It’s nearly time for Plastic-Free July and if you want to join in and make a difference, why not try and eliminate these worst offenders of plastic pollutions?

Plastic Bottles

Takeaway Coffee Cups

Bathroom Plastics

Avoidable Food Packaging

Did you know that there is an annual audit for the UK’s worst plastic polluters and they are consistently Coca Cola, McDonald and PepsiCo – but Tesco appears in the top 6?

We need the government to take action NOW by introducing a deposit return scheme and an extended producer responsibility scheme, like those successfully operated in other countries, to make polluters pay. Why should tax payers pick up the bill for plastic polluted towns, countryside, waterways and seas while those who pollute pay little or nothing to clean up? An EPR scheme would drive real cuts to carbon emissions and create a greener environment for us all.

If you want to do more to tackle the plastic crisis, why not sign up as a leader, business or individual and join or start your local Surfers Against Sewage Plastic-Free Community?
